now if katsuya had to pick a dorito flavor, he'd pick ranch because ranch is cool and exciting, and that's what he's all about! energetic and upbeat, he's bursting at the seams with untapped potential, and has the heart of a city boy tragically trapped in a country boy's body. it's no secret that katsuya has big dreams for the future: the boy loudly announces his ambitions every other day to himself, even when he's in public. that's just how determined he is to achieve his dreams, so he reaffirms it often.
an amiable goofball based on many accounts, katsudon (as his friends affectionately call him) is a big-hearted class clown who can't resist cracking jokes all the time. but beneath all the wisecracks lies a heart of gold. he's the kind of person who'd go out of his way to give someone a helping hand, no questions asked. his helpfulness is well-known around the town: he's opened countless doors, lifted tons of groceries, and helped many elderly folk up the stairs.
while katsuya's very much full of bravado, he doesn't think that highly of himself at all. even though he has the mind of an engineer, he manages to be a horrible test taker due to nerves and thus constantly comes in second place to daisuke, his best friend. though he tries not to let these insecurities plague him, there are plenty of sleepless nights when he wonders if he's ever going to escape this sleepy country town where nothing ever seems to happens. to make matters worse, katsuya has yet to face his growing feelings of animosity toward daisuke, who outdoes him in seemingly every possible way.

katsuya crossed paths with raijin one fateful night when he was heading home from cram school and passed by a shrine. somewhat tipsy from drinking, katsuya figured that a prayer for good luck wouldn't hurt. he fished through his pockets for some change and dropped a few coins into the collections box before clapping his hands together and closing his eyes.

an everyman figure through and through, katsuya's basically a country boy who's been thrown headfirst into supernatural circumstances wilder than his wildest dreams. at first, he's delighted to have an escape from his dreary reality and readily accepts the role. it doesn't take long before katsuya begins to cool down and wonder what all of this entails. it sinks in that it can't all be fun and games because after all, since when have the gods ever given mortals something without any strings attached?
