❝ In reaching out to explore the distant hills where the gods dwell and the deeps where the monsters are lurking, we are perhaps discovering the way home. ❞

Nine young people correspond to different elements, seasons, and Shinto gods, and must serve as their proxies and compete in ethereal karuta matches. — Katana
Flash to Japan in the future– no, not too far into the future, but far enough to be the turn of a new century. Amongst the Shinto gods, this is a time to celebrate– as soon, a new reincarnation game will start. Soon, the balances will be tested and measured and weighed, and soon– so soon, will the gods be granted new life. Reintroduction to the wheel of life.
A proxy will be chosen, hand picked by gods lucky enough to have been chosen themselves– one for every element, two for a season, eight in all. Such is the way of things. For a year, these proxies will purify the shrines of their god's choosing. Fight against the corruption of everyday living. Every solstice will harken a karuta match, and the bonuses to winning will become clear in time.
Such is the way of things until a god rises, almost obnoxiously oblivious to the past few millenniums. A pittance from Amaterasu, it's given– this Kinmamon of Ryukyu. It's given a proxy, a player in this game, and an element all its own. Late to the game by nearly two months, Amano Yorie is chosen to play for her god– overly light-hearted, overly jovial.
The gods do not take this girl or her god seriously– how could they? Of void and sea and with a smile, they trip and stumble through the game. Yorie falls in love with the world, and her new friends. All of this in her heart– she makes a decision at the turn of the new year that rocks what foundations there are.
