❝ In the summer night the evening still seems present, but the dawn is here. ❞
— Kiyohara no Fukayabu
— Kiyohara no Fukayabu
Proxy of Raijin, representative of summer and the element of lightning, and resident of Awa, Tokushima prefecture.
Energetic and upbeat, Katsuya seems to sizzle, crackle, and pop much like a lightning bolt. He's got determination in spades and an optimistic attitude to boot. Just think of a shounen protagonist (Naruto, if I had to be honest) and that's Katsudon, as his friends like to call him, in a nutshell. No matter how much life tries to keep him down, he'll get back up without fail because that's just who he is.
Katsuya is the kind of person who tries to make the most out of life's lemons. While he's had big setbacks, he does his best to move forward without dwelling on the past. When things don't go his way, he'll just laugh it off and crack a few jokes—but beneath all the wisecracks lies a heart of gold. Katsuya's kindness is well-known around town: he's held open countless doors, carried tons of groceries, and helped many elderly folk across the street.
While Katsuya's brimming with confidence on the surface, the reality is that he actually doesn't think that highly of himself at all. He failed to get into his dream university once, so he's a little terrified of failing again and falling into a rut. Even though he tells himself that his hard work will soon pay off, there are still times when he doubts himself and wonders if he's ever going to escape this sleepy country town.
A rounin with his sights set on Tokyo Tech. Currently works part-time at a bookstore in his neighborhood.
Okamoto Nobuhiko as Mikorin from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. Katsuya's voice is like an ember, warm and inviting. He speaks in an open and friendly manner that can put even the most nervous hearts at ease.
Katsuya hails from a large family of farmers based in Shikoku, the smallest and most rural of Japan's four islands. Ever since he was a child, Katsuya's dreamed of one day escaping the countryside and leaving the small-town life behind. Fast-forward to the present, and Katsuya's now busy trying to make those dreams come true by studying for Tokyo Tech's entrance exams—take two, since he failed the first time.
One night, Katsuya passed by a shrine on his way home from cram school. While he had never been much of a spiritual person growing up, Katsuya found himself oddly drawn to the shrine somehow; maybe a prayer for good luck wouldn't hurt, he decided. After dropping a few coins into the collections box, he clapped his hands together and closed his eyes to focus.
Enter Raijin himself, the god of lightning, thunder, and storms, in all his demonic-looking glory and complete with thunder and lightning effects—just hovering right in front of Katsuya's face and leering at him with squinty eyes and sharp teeth. A loud, booming voice: "I've seen your scrawny ass walk by a thousand times—finally, finally the brat decides to pay his respects, eh?"
The poor boy's screams of terror were heard all throughout the town.
The everyman of the cast, Katsuya's basically an Average Joe who's been thrown headfirst into supernatural circumstances wilder than his wildest dreams. At first, he eagerly accepts the role, delighted to have an escape from his dreary reality. It soon sinks in that it can't all be fun and games though. After all, since when have the gods ever given mortals something without any strings attached?
Katsuya's canon is set in the mystical world of Yuugen, which features an ensemble cast of nine people from different parts of Japan.
In battle, Katsuya wields several kunai that are charged with pure electricity. He can use multiple kunai to create a chain effect of electrocuting as well.
