❝ Looking at the moon thoughts of a thousand things fill me with sadness—but autumn's dejection does not come to me alone. ❞
— Ooe no Chisato
— Ooe no Chisato
Proxy of Inari-Ookami, representative of autumn and the element of earth, and resident of Kashima, Saga Prefecture.
Sayuri gives off the sort of cool, detached air that lends itself to her reputation as an ice queen. She rarely shows her emotions on her face, if at all, and cracks a smile maybe once every blue moon. Twice, if she's in a really good mood. It's sometimes hard to tell if she has genuine difficulty expressing her emotions or just doesn't see the point in it. The answer? It's a mixture of both, honestly.
Etiquette does comes naturally to her though; she wears it like a second skin, keeping others at a comfortable distance with vague smiles and idle chit-chat. "Oh, I've been doing well." (I haven’t been inspired in weeks.) "And how about yourself?" (I don’t want to be here.) "Ah, the weather is lovely today." (It's dreary outside as usual.) She prefers more passive roles when it comes to interacting with people, and likes to observe others as if she were watching a play unfold on a stage.
While she comes across as cold and distant, Sayuri's really just a neutral person who prefers minding her own business. An avid reader and writer, she often busies herself with learning new things, and can hold discussions about all sorts of esoteric subjects. Sayuri's also quite perceptive about people in general, even though she isn't too great at empathizing with them. People are simply interesting to her at best, little more than subjects to be studied and dissected.
Suzumi: Look at all those sheep!
Sayuri: (looking at people) I see them....
An aspiring writer who wants to work in either editing or translating.
Komatsu Mikako as herself and Murao Shuuko from Ao Haru Ride.
The only child of a police superintendent and an executive editor, Sayuri grew up in a household where work came first and family came second. She was a quiet, introverted child, preferring the company of books to people.
Sayuri's withdrawn nature proved to be both a magnet and a repellent by the time she reached middle school, much to her detriment. Her calm disposition was often perceived as curt and standoffish, the sort of rude disinterest that invited dislike. Over time, Sayuri was ostracized by her peers, reduced to a mere shadow in the classroom—so be it, she decided.
She poured herself into her schoolwork, seeking privacy in the library, which soon became a haven of sorts. The library was the one place where she could hide herself behind piles of books, writing to her heart's content when inspiration struck. Words were safer. If she couldn't control certain things about herself, such as the tone of her voice or perhaps the subtle twist of her mouth, then she would at least make an honest attempt to express her thoughts and feelings through the written word.
Sayuri saw high school, where she was surrounded by new and unfamiliar faces, as an opportunity to maybe reset and distance herself from a reputation that no longer preceded her. She consciously tried changing her demeanor, making half-hearted attempts at befriending others. She even tried dating a few boys here and there, though those relationships quickly fizzled out since she wasn't the slightest bit straight.
When Inari-Ookami selects her as a proxy, Sayuri's overjoyed at the prospect of becoming someone special and rising above the ordinary and mundane. She adjusts to the idea far quicker than some of the other proxies do. She sits on one end of the spectrum, viewing her role as a heavy, god-given responsibility whereas Katsuya sees it as something fun, like a fantasy role-playing game; Suzumi is the balance between them, practicing a good degree of wariness wherever she goes.
Akano Masahiro is Sayuri's father, whom she looked up to as a child. The superintendent of Kashima Police Station in Saga Prefecture, Masahiro has a strict, no-fun-allowed sort of personality that developed after his promotion. Nowadays he comes home late from work and just heads straight to bed, unless he remembers to eat the dinner Sayuri left out for him.
Akano Kaori is Sayuri's mother. An executive editor of a successful publishing firm based in Fukuoka, Kaori is an elegant and composed woman with both an eye for detail and a quick-witted mind. She and Sayuri are very close, bonding over their shared love of everything from cooking to writing.
Fujiwara Hideki is Sayuri's cousin. Cunning and knowledgeable, he has a sly streak. Sayuri looks up to him, and sometimes seeks his advice when it comes to dealing with people.
Fujiwara Hanako is Hideki's wife. Serene and calm, she is a skilled practitioner of Ikebana. Hanako tends to take Hideki's shenanigans in stride, but also knows how to keep him in check.
Nagase Suzumi is the girl who manages to catch Sayuri's interest and hold it.
Sayuri's canon is set in the mystical world of Yuugen, which features an ensemble cast of nine people from different parts of Japan.
In battle, Sayuri wields a naginata that can manipulate the earth itself. While she isn't as physically strong as the others, she has a great deal of spiritual power and thus boasts an advantage on the celestial plane.
