a student at yuei academy.
an unstoppable force meets an immovable object and that object is none other than taka igarashi. solid as a rock in both mind and body, taka is a person of convictions and ideals, someone who won’t hesitate to put their foot down and stand up for their beliefs. honest and forthright, they strive to be clear in both words and actions. they can prove to be somewhat reckless as well, jumping into the fray with an utter lack of foresight.
all in all, taka really just does whatever the hell they feel like doing, making their behavior hard to predict since they aren’t one for patterns. on the surface, taka comes across as simple-minded, which actually suits their needs just fine. they’d rather let people see them that way, as it makes defying their expectations that much more satisfying.
> dense and oblivious at times
> tends to close themselves off when it comes to their Serious Emotions
> no need to be best, only Good and Kind
> sometimes gets lost in their own head, thinks a lot
quirk: guard is the composite of kazuo's 'barrier' and akemi's 'reflection' quirks. kazuo can create barriers that absorb physical and emitter attacks, while akemi can reflect back all attacks that make direct contact with her body.
to activate their quirk, taka crosses their index and middle fingers on one hand and concentrates; if they want to create two barriers at once, then they cross their fingers on both hands. later on, taka's output increases to five barriers, which can be maintained simultaneously for a maximum of five minutes. they can also fight without having to keep their fingers crossed, relying instead on metaphorically "crossing one's heart" to center and focus their thoughts.
taka's energy barriers apply force to oncoming attacks and accelerate them in the opposite direction. if you were to throw a punch at the barrier, the punch would be slowed down and then the force would be repelled back at you. the barriers are essentially extensions of taka's will and creativity, and ultimately limited by their physical and mental endurance.
guard is not a solely defensive quirk. taka can slam their barriers into opponents with all the force of a monster truck, so long as their movements are well-timed and coordinated. they can also change the shapes and sizes of their barriers, though the process tends to drain their energy faster than they'd like. for example, taka can mold a barrier into the shape of a hand and use it to punch.
voice: junko minagawa as haruka tenoh from sailor moon. low to medium-pitched and husky. speaks smoothly and enunciates clearly.
backstory: decades before the era of quirks, the igarashi family set down their roots and built a dojo called the tanrenkan. the hall began as a dojo for judo and karate, eventually adding self-defense arts such as aikido and jujutsu. since quirks are now heavily regulated today, kazuo believed it was important to continue teaching quirkless arts in conjunction with the times. the igarashi clan currently has several established pro heroes and martial artists to their name.
takako igarashi was born on a spring day, kazuo and akemi's second child out of three and the only girl. as the middle child, she turned out to be a crybaby, often bursting into dramatic tears over the slightest mishap in a bid for someone's attention. if neither parent was around, takako would cling onto the next available person-- her brother, hikaru.
> bullied in elementary and middle school over her looks and height
> maybe mention the girl they dated?? ehhh
> dropped the 'ko' from their name and assumed a neutral gender identity
> didn't get into the hero department but still passed the exams and got into the department of general education
> just recently transferred into the department of heroes as a third year and hopes to make a good impression
> failed step one
maybe taka had difficulty using their quirk for mental rather than physical reasons and got worried they can't get into yuei bc of it. taka could be a late bloomer, ends up having to work a lot harder just to catch up with others and barely scrapes by to get into yuei-- not even making it into the department of heroes at first though
so it hits taka a lot harder after they pour all this hard work into becoming a hero like they've always dreamed about, only to fall apart on the job and pretty much lose their whole sense of identity and being. their trauma reawakens a lot of old insecurities and doubts that taka thought was over, so they end up collapsing internally and folding in on themselves. self-isolation and bad brain just keeps them from reaching out to anyone but immediate family.
hikaru who got into yuei and works as a pro hero himself eventually goes into mental health counseling, specifically for those also in pro heroics bc you're bound to see some messed up shit on the job
aki goes on to study quirk genetics-- the biology behind it, so as to better understand how quirks manifest in the body, what's the "quirk factor," and how it connects to the mind as well
taka's canon is set in the world of boku no hero academia, specifically japan.
takako (貴子) has the kanji for "noble, child." igarashi (五十嵐) means "fifty storms."
