A teacher and guidance counselor at U.A. High School.
Dense as a rock and stubborn as a bull, Taka Igarashi is the kind of foolhardy person who'll do whatever they feel like doing (within reason, of course). One could say that Taka wears their heart on their sleeve, especially seeing how honest they are when it comes to both words and actions. Now that being said, Taka can also be rather reckless, often saying and doing things on a sudden impulse—which makes them look, for a lack of better words, moronic.
On the surface, Taka comes across as simple-minded and easy to understand, an impression that's worked to their advantage quite a few times. People have underestimated Taka before, only to be caught off guard when Taka seized the upper hand. So in fact Taka would rather be seen that way, since it makes defying those expectations that much more satisfying. Besides, what Taka may lack in innate talent, they make up for it tenfold with perseverance and hard work.
While Taka seems to be open about their feelings, their tough exterior hides a sensitive heart. They tend to clam up whenever their deepest emotions are involved, for fear of getting hurt. As Taka sees it, to love someone is to create a vulnerable part of themself with the softest and thinnest skin. Simply put, Taka's scared of allowing others near their squishy core. At the lowest point in their life, Taka distances themself from friends and family out of shame. Though it takes a while and a couple of pushes in the right direction, Taka eventually begins to accept the love and support that had always been waiting for them.
Aura Guard is the composite of Kazuo's 'Barrier' and Akemi's 'Reflection' quirks. Kazuo can create powerful barriers that absorb physical and emitter attacks, while Akemi can reflect back attacks that are within 5cm of her body.
Taka activates Aura Guard by crossing their index and middle finger on one hand. If Taka wants to create two barriers at once, then they cross their fingers on both hands. As an adult, Taka increases the output to five barriers, which they can maintain simultaneously for a maximum of five minutes. They no longer need to cross their fingers by this point, relying instead on "crossing their heart" to center and focus their thoughts.
Their barriers apply force to incoming attacks and accelerate those attacks in the opposite direction. If you threw a punch at the barrier, the punch would not only be slowed down, but also its force would be repelled right back at you. Aura Guard is essentially an extension of Taka's will, creativity, and endurance. Since Aura Guard's trade-offs are physical and mental stamina, Taka will suffer from extreme fatigue if they overuse their quirk. In cases like that, they'll sleep the whole day away.
Aura Guard, despite its name, is not a solely defensive quirk. Both an unstoppable force and an immovable object, Taka can use their barriers like battering rams, slamming them into opponents with half a metric ton of force. They can change the shapes and sizes of their barriers as well, though the process drains their energy rather quickly. The barriers can range from invisible to visibly transparent and cyan in color, depending on Taka's strategic needs.
Junko Minagawa as Haruka Tenoh from Sailor Moon. Low to medium-pitched and husky. Speaks smoothly and enunciates clearly.
Decades before the era of quirks, the Igarashi clan put down their roots in Japan with the Tanrenkan (鍛錬館, which means "hardening hall"). Tanrenkan began as a dojo for karate and judo, eventually adding self-defense arts such as aikido and jujutsu to their repertoire. When quirks started to surface, the Tanrenkan opened its doors to people with quirks as well. Presently, the Igarashi clan has several established pro heroes and martial artists to their name.
Takako Igarashi was born on a spring day, Kazuo and Akemi's second child out of three. As the middle child, Taka was a crybaby who would burst into dramatic tears in a bid for attention. If Kazuo and Akemi weren't around to give her that right-now validation, then Takako would cling onto the next available person. That person was often Hikaru, her older brother and the eldest child of the family. For the longest time, Takako looked up to him and tried to emulate his confident personality.
While elementary school was relatively peaceful, middle school was nothing short of a living nightmare. Takako was bullied over everything from her boyish looks to her tall height, but more than anything else, classmates mocked Takako's ineptitude with her quirk. Even though she could hold her own in hand-to-hand combat, Takako had trouble wielding her quirk. Somehow, the composite was more challenging for whatever reason than kazuo and akemi's quirks on their own; Hikaru and Aki both seemed to have it easier than their sister as well.
Nonetheless, Takako still had hopes of making it into U.A. High School, the top hero academy in the world. While the bullying had done a number on her confidence, she was determined to follow in her brother's footsteps and become a pro hero one day. She began training intensely in the hopes of improving her chances of passing the U.A. exams. Thanks to all of her hard work and the support of her family, Takako scraped by and just barely made it into U.A.'s Department of Education. Now, Takako could focus her sights on a new goal: the Department of Heroes.
At some point between their second and third year, Takako dropped the 'ko' from their given name to go by 'Taka' instead. More comfortable in their skin than before, Taka worked harder than ever so they could transfer into the Department of Heroes. By the end of their second year, Taka accomplished that goal with much help and a blessing from their beloved and esteemed Kuwaga-sensei.
And so, Taka Igarashi walked into Class 1-A on the first day of third year and enthusiastically introduced themself to their new classmates. As the seating chart would have it, Taka found themself sitting in front of one Ayahime Kanzaki.
The rest, so they say, is history.
Taka's enormous bear of a father and bearer of the Barrier quirk. A stern-looking man whose powerful and intimidating aura belies his kind and soft heart, Kazuo is the current head of the family and the grandmaster of the Tanrenkan.
Taka's mother and bearer of the Reflection quirk. A warm, caring woman who'll take any opportunity to "adopt" others, Akemi has a hidden aggression that strikes like a viper when she (and any of her family and loved ones) is wronged in some way.
Taka's older brother and bearer of the Barrier quirk. A sly, sharp-tongued sassbucket who graduated from U.A. and now works as a pro hero. After what happens to Taka, Hikaru decides to go into mental health counseling, specifically for other pro heroes.
Taka's younger brother and bearer of the Reflection quirk. A calm and reliable person with an inclination toward science. Aki goes on to study quirk genetics, in order to better understand how quirks manifest in the body.
The quirkless mother of Hisora, Hanako found herself backed into a corner after her scumbag of an ex-lover abandoned both mother and child. Deciding that adoption would be the best option, Hanako gave Hisora up—only to be invited under the same roof as the Kanzaki family.
The first of Taka and Aya's three children, Hisora was adopted by the couple a few years after they married. Hot-tempered and sharp-tongued, she embodies her volatile quirk through and through, and takes after Hanako, her mother, in temperament.
The second of Taka and Aya's three children, Kyouji, or Kyou as he's referred to by family and friends, has the kind of calm demeanor that naturally relaxes all those he encounters. Perpetually sleepy, he's a mama's boy to the core with a huge bias for Aya.
The third of Taka and Aya's three children, Yurika was named in honor of Oniyuri Kanzaki, Aya's younger sister (and one of Taka's two sister-in-laws). Bubbly and sweet, Yurika exudes a magnetic charm and friendliness that shine warmly through her wide dimpled smile.
From enemies to rivals to friends to lovers to ex-lovers to friends... to lovers again, Ayahime Kanzaki has been on a roller coaster with Taka from day one. The two got on each other's nerves at first and even needed to have a few spars to work out their tension. As their high school days passed, Aya and Taka slowly grew comfortable with one another, developing a mutual trust and respect that blossomed into something much, much more.
Taka's best bro from U.A. days to their best bro at Taka and Aya's wedding, Hitoka has been a huge pillar of love and support for Taka ever since high school. While they inevitably devolve into even bigger morons around each other, there's never a dull moment between them and Taka wouldn't trade that for the world.
Hitoka's wife and the supermom of nine otterkittens, Emi gets along well with Taka. They've confided things in her that they haven't even told Hitoka, and she's given them helpful advice that they cherish to this day.
Taka's canon is set in the world of My Hero Academia.
Takako (貴子) has the kanji for "noble" and "child."
Igarashi (五十嵐) means "fifty storms."
