an unstoppable force meets an immovable object and that object is none other than taka igarashi. stubborn as a bull, taka won't hesitate to defend their ideals and convictions; their beliefs are something that they hold very dear to their heart. even though they're admittedly dense and oblivious at times, taka strives to be honest and forthright in both words and actions. they can be rather reckless as well, often jumping into the thick of things on an impulse and without much foresight.
while taka seems to be quite open and free with their emotions, their tough exterior does hide a surprisingly sensitive heart. taka tends to close themselves off when their deepest emotions are involved, for fear of showing vulnerability and inviting harsh judgment. at one point in their life, taka even struggles with depression, but in the end chooses to lean on their loved ones and focus on recovery.
all in all, taka is the kind of person who will just do whatever they feel like doing (within reason of course), which makes their behavior somewhat hard to predict. on the surface, taka comes across as simple-minded and that suits their needs just fine. they'd rather let people see them that way since it makes defying such expectations that much more satisfying. besides, what they may lack in innate talent, they make up for it tenfold in perseverance and hard work.
aura guard is the composite of kazuo's 'barrier' and akemi's 'reflection' quirks. kazuo can create barriers that absorb physical and emitter attacks, while akemi can reflect back all attacks that make direct contact with her body.
to activate their quirk, taka crosses their index and middle fingers on one hand and concentrates; if they want to create two barriers at once, then they cross their fingers on both hands. later on, taka's output increases to five barriers, which can be maintained simultaneously for a maximum of five minutes. they can also fight without having to keep their fingers crossed, relying instead on metaphorically "crossing one's heart" to center and focus their thoughts.
taka's energy barriers apply force to oncoming attacks and accelerate them in the opposite direction. if you were to throw a punch at the barrier, the punch would be slowed down and then the force would be repelled back at you. the barriers are essentially extensions of taka's will and creativity, and ultimately limited by their physical and mental endurance.
aura guard is not a solely defensive quirk. taka can slam their barriers into opponents with all the force of a truck, so long as their movements are well-timed and coordinated. they can also change the shapes and sizes of their barriers, though the process tends to drain their energy faster than they'd like. for example, taka can mold a barrier into the shape of a hand and use it to punch.
junko minagawa as haruka tenoh from sailor moon. low to medium-pitched and husky. speaks smoothly and enunciates clearly.
decades before the era of quirks, the igarashi clan set down their roots by building a dojo known as the tanrenkan (鍛錬館, which means "hardening hall"). tanrenkan began as a dojo for judo and karate, eventually adding self-defense arts such as aikido and jujutsu to their repertoire. when quirks came around, kazuo igarashi, the heir at the time, stood firm with his beliefs and decided to continue teaching martial arts. only now, tanrenkan would have its doors open to those with quirks as well. presently, the igarashi clan has several established pro heroes and martial artists to their name.
takako igarashi was born on a spring day, kazuo and akemi's second child out of three and the only girl. as the middle child, she was a crybaby, often bursting into dramatic tears over the slightest mishap in a bid for attention. if kazuo and akemi weren't around, then takako would cling onto the next available person, who usually turned out to be hikaru, her older brother and the eldest child. for the longest time, takako looked up to hikaru and would do her best to emulate him, though that behavior didn't carry over too well into middle school.
while elementary school was pretty much smooth sailing, middle school proved to be nothing short of a nightmare. takako was bullied over everything from her boyish looks to her tall height, but more than anything else, classmates mocked takako's ineptitude in all things related to her quirk. even though she could hold her own in a quirkless fight, takako was surprisingly clumsy when it came to her composite quirk. somehow, the composite was more challenging to wield than kazuo and akemi’s quirks on their own; hikaru and aki both seemed to have it easier compared to their sister.
nonetheless, takako still had hopes of making it into yuei, the top hero academy in the world. even though the bullying had done a number on her confidence, she was determined to follow in her brother’s footsteps and become a hero one day. as such, takako began to train intensely with her quirk, wanting to improve her chances of passing the yuei exams. thanks to all of her hard work and the support of her family, she managed to scrape by and make it into yuei's department of education. now, takako needed to set her eyes on a new goal: the department of heroes.
somewhere along the way to the top and after a lot of soul searching, taka decided to drop the 'ko' from their given name, thus assuming a more neutral gender identity. now that taka felt more comfortable in their skin, they worked harder than ever so they could transfer into the department of heroes. by the end of their second year, taka was able to accomplish that goal with much help and a blessing from kuwaga-sensei.
and so, taka igarashi walked into class 1-A on the first day of third year, enthusiastically introducing themselves to their new classmates. as the seating chart would have it, taka found themselves sitting in front of one ayahime kanzaki.
the rest, they say, is history.
taka's muscular bear of a father and bearer of the barrier quirk. a stern-looking man whose intimidating aura belies a kind heart. the current head of the family and of the tanrenkan.
taka's mother and bearer of the reflection quirk. a warm, caring person with a hidden aggressive nature that strikes like a viper when she (or any of her family and loved ones) is wronged in some way.
taka's older brother and bearer of the barrier quirk. a sly, sharp-tongued sassbucket who graduated from yuei and now works as a pro hero. eventually goes into mental health counseling, specifically for those in pro heroics.
taka's younger brother and bearer of the reflection quirk. a calm and reliable person with an inclination toward science. goes on to study quirk genetics, so as to better understand how quirks manifest in the body.
the first of taka and aya's three children, hisora was adopted by the couple a few years after they married. hot-tempered and sharp-tongued, she embodies her volatile quirk through and through, and takes after hanako, her mother, in temperament.
the second of taka and aya's three children, kyouji, or kyou as he's referred to by family and friends, has the kind of calm demeanor that naturally relaxes all those he encounters. perpetually sleepy, he's a mama's boy to the core with a huge bias for aya.
the third of taka and aya's three children, yurika was named in honor of oniyuri kanzaki, aya's younger sister (and one of taka's two sister-in-laws). bubbly and sweet, yurika exudes a magnetic charm and friendliness that shine warmly through her dimpled smile.
the quirkless mother of hisora and perhaps an unlikely addition to the kanzaki family, hanako found herself alone after the man she had been dating left them both behind. deciding that adoption would be the best option, hanako gave hisora up-- only to be invited to live under the same roof with her new family.
from enemies to rivals to friends to lovers to ex-lovers to friends to lovers again, aya's been on a bit of a roller coaster with taka from day one. the two of them got on each other's nerves at first, and it actually took a few spars to get some unresolved tension out. as the days at yuei passed, they grew relaxed and comfortable around one another, eventually confessing mutual feelings that blossomed into something much, much more.
their best bro from yuei days to their best bro at taka's wedding, hitoka has been a huge pillar of love and support for taka ever since high school. while they honestly devolve into even bigger morons around each other, there's never a dull moment between them and taka wouldn't change that for the world.
hitoka's wife and the supermom of their nine otterkittens, emi gets along well with taka. they've confided things in her that they haven't even told hitoka, and she's given them helpful advice that they cherish to this day.
taka's canon is set in the world of my hero academia, specifically on japan.
takako (貴子) has the kanji for "noble, child." igarashi (五十嵐) means "fifty storms."
